Just before morning, Moses extended his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal condition. The Egyptians were fleeing [the water], but God swamped the Egyptians in the middle of the sea.

fleeing (Septuagint). Or, literally, 'fleeing toward [the water in confusion]' (Shemoth Rabbah; Rashi).
