The First and Second Generations
5:1 This is the book of the Chronicles of Adam:

On the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

5:2 He created them male and female. He blessed them and named them Man (Adam) on the day that they were created.
5:3 Adam lived 130 years, and he had a son in his likeness and form. He named him Seth.
5:4 Adam lived 800 years after he had Seth, and he had sons and daughters.
5:5 All the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

The Third Generation
5:6 Seth lived 105 years, and he had a son Enosh.
5:7 Seth lived 807 years after he had Enosh, and he had sons and daughters.
5:8 All of Seth's days were 912 years, and he died.

The Fourth Generation
5:9 Enosh lived 90 years, and he had a son Kenan.
5:10 Enosh lived 815 years after he had Kenan, and he had sons and daughters.
5:11 All of Enosh's days were 905 years, and he died.

The Fifth Generation
5:12 Kenan lived 70 years, and he had a son Mahalalel.
5:13 Kenan lived 840 years after he had Mahalalel, and he had sons and daughters.
5:14 All of Kenan's days were 910 years, and he died.

The Sixth Generation
5:15 Mahalalel lived 65 years, and he had a son Yered.
5:16 Mahalalel lived 830 years after he had Yered, and he had sons and daughters.
5:17 All of Mahalalel's days were 895 years, and he died.

The Seventh Generation
5:18 Yered lived 162 years, and he had a son Enoch.
5:19 Yered lived 800 years after he had Enoch, and he had sons and daughters.
5:20 All of Yered's days were 962 years, and he died.

The Eighth Generation
5:21 Enoch lived 65 years, and he had a son Methuselah.
5:22 Enoch walked with God for 300 years after he had Methuselah, and he had sons and daughters.
5:23 All of Enoch's days were 365 years.
5:24 Enoch walked with God, and he was no more, because God had taken him.

The Ninth Generation
5:25 Methuselah lived 187 years, and he had a son Lemekh.
5:26 Methuselah lived 782 years after he had Lemekh, and he had sons and daughters.
5:27 All of Methuselah's days were 969 years, and he died.

The Tenth Generation
5:28 Lemekh lived 182 years, and he had a son.
5:29 He named him Noah, saying, 'This one will bring us relief from our work and the anguish of our hands, from the soil that God has cursed.'
5:30 Lemekh lived 595 years after he had Noah, and he had sons and daughters.
5:31 All of Lemekh's days were 777 years, and he died.

Noah's Children and the Titans
5:32 Noah was 500 years old, and Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Yefeth.

Chronicles of Adam
  (Targum; Saadia). Or, 'chronicles of man' (Sforno; Septuagint).

Enoch
  Chanokh in Hebrew. See note on Genesis 4:17.

Methuselah
  Methushelach in Hebrew.

God had taken him
  According to tradition, he entered paradise without dying. See note on Genesis 3:24.

Noah
  Noach in Hebrew, meaning rest. Also related to the word nacham, meaning 'to bring relief' or 'comfort.'

Yefeth
  Japheth in English. See note on Genesis 9:27.
